oh boy. you can tell her handlers trained her to use certain words in her response, speak without an accent, and keep her well manicured hands on her cute little hips. she's trying so hard to manage all these tasks that she can't even answer a pretty simple question. poor thing.
as much as i am not a fan of pageants, i can see where, if you are bright, attractive, talented, and articulate, this is a perfect arena to showcase your abilities in exchange for scholarship money. the trouble comeswhen a contestant doesn't have all the pieces of the puzzle. my guess is that, if she got to the question round, she must have aced the other rounds, so she's no hack, but she's not really fast thinking enough and relies on pageant trainer tactics too much. i think she probably started hearing herself spiraling out of control and threw in more pageant answer keywords like lifesavers to herself. at that point, however, she had already sunk. unfortunately, to the layperson, she just comes out looking like a "typical dumb blonde pageant girl".
We have a lot of pageants around out neck of the woods. These girls compete for, as Paula mentioned, scholarship money, etc. They are not always the cutest little girls in town. They are usually the smartest, most civilly active, personable, poised girls, though.
It's too bad that they have to go through the dog and pony show, though.

That's painful to watch. I've never understood why anyone would want to "compete" in a pageant.
I agree with Paul, it is just painful to watch. She doesn't just sound dumb, she sounds like she is completely out of it.

The best part? Definitely her aborted throw-away line (pre-empted by the emcee), "...for our children." Won't SOMEbody think of the children?
Poor critter. She sure is pretty, though.
