BRICK MEET HEAD: It just hit me as I typed that last post about my brother and his poker: I'm the writer, Eric's the competitor, Casey's the musician. We're all so clearly who we are. Anything else we do is just window-dressing. Some people have to wander the deserts of their identity in search of the oasis of their soul. Us Hess boys, it's friggin' stamped on our foreheads what we're supposed to be doing with our lives.

It was pretty evident from very early on that you were/are the writer, never any doubt for me. You could write better than me by the time you were in 6th grade. (Not that it takes much to accomplish that!) Eric was always the natural competitor/athlete from about two years old, it always seemed to be what he lived for. Casey, on the other hand didn't really delve into the music arena until about 12 or 13, but once he got a taste of it, there was no doubt where his talents were. But, what I still try to figure out is where all this creativity and competitiveness comes from, 'cause it sure isn't from my genes, so guess you must all lean more heavily in your dad's direction. Anyway, for a parent, just to see you all doing what you enjoy and excel at is very pleasing.

Are you saying Eric was born to be a professional poker player? 'Cause I was kinda hoping for a professional golfer instead. Why does it have to be gambling?

By the way, ask him about his big news.

Nevermind the "big news" comment. I am reading your posts in order (from top to bottom) and not in the order you have posted them. Obviously, you already know about his big news.

Never said that "professional gambler" was his destination, just letting you know that he was always driven to compete, and playing cards captured his attention very early on. His favorite entertainment while in high school was to play cards with his friends. Think the handwriting was on the wall.
